Oh the Filler Words...
An Epidemic of Filler Words Um, You Know, So, Right, Like, Uh, Sure…you get the point. Over the past several months, I have been in the audience of multiple presentations. And I’ve noticed one major trend – filler words. I don’t enter these spaces looking for flaws, yet it is difficult to not be distracted when every other word is “um” or “like” or every sentence ends with “right?” Have you ever sat in a presentation and started counting how many times the individual uses a filler word? I will admit that I have been guilty of counting or fighting the urge to count. When the fillers are really bad, it can be distracting to the point that I miss the message that was shared. I am certainly not a perfect speaker and I’m guilty of using them at times too, but with practice and self-awareness, my ability to avoid them has drastically improved.
